2011 Audi A8 available with EDGE, Google Earth

We're guessing it won't be the tipping point that finally convinces you to buy an Audi A8, but it looks like those in the market for the car will be able to add a nice little option to the 2011 model: a built-in nav system complete with Google Earth and a GPRS / EDGE modem. Yeah, so it's not 3G, but it is actually the first time that Google Earth has been made accessible in a manufacture vehicle, which certainly counts for something. In addition to serving up various Google-sourced points of interest, that modem will also let you download a range of other up-to-date information to the nav unit, although it's not clear exactly what that will entail. No word on how much it'll add to the cost of the A8, but it looks like it won't be available right when the car rolls out early next year -- Audi is only saying "mid 2010" at the moment.

As some commenter have helpfully noted, it seems that while the A8 won't initially roll out with 3G, it will be getting a UMTS modem in mid 2010, which should provide the bandwidth necessary for Google Earth and allow for simultaneous voice and data connections.

Audi e-tron Concept

Audi is showing an hardnosed purist dense sports car with all-electric drive at the first major auto show of 2010. The Detroit showcar Audi e-tron is the name of this 3.93 meter (154.72 in) long and 1.78 meter (70.08 in) wide but just 1.22 meter (48.03 in) tall two-seater; just a few months after the debut of the Audi e-tron at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, this is now the second electric concept vehicle from the brand with the four rings.

Coupled with the Detroit showcar Audi e-tron’s low gross weight of around only 1,350 kilograms (2976.24 lb), high-torque power units pouring the rear wheels guarantee adequate road performance. Two electric motors with a combined output of 150 kW (204 hp) and 2,650 Nm (1954.54 lb-ft) accelerate the coupe with ASF-design aluminum body from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 5.9 seconds. The Audi e-tron accomplishes the sprint from 60 to 120 km/h  (37.28 - 74.56 mph) in a mere 5.1 seconds.

Audi A3 will be for United States only

Europeans go passionate for the Volkwagen Golf, but not so much for the Jetta. Like, not mad at all. Americans, on the other hand, will give props to a hatchback, but what we really love is a trunk in which to put our junk. According to Inside Line, Audi has determined to stop letting its A3 hatchback be a thumping boy while trying to sway American tastes and instead it has dedicated to bringing us an A3 sedan.

The small sedan is already in the increase pipeline and will arrive in the U.S. – its only intended market – in 2012. It is reportedly going be the size of the first-generation Audi A4, the B5 model. That sedan was 178 inches long and 68.2 inches wide, whereas the current A3 hatch is 169 inches long and 69.5 inches wide.

The question is whether the A3 only needs a trunk in order to lure more buyers. The current hatch starts at $27,270. If the Golf and Jetta are taken as examples, there is just $135 difference between the two cars, the Jetta being more expensive. This plan could theoretically work if the A3 sedan is similarly close to the hatch, but anywhere along the way we feel like it will need to shed its image as a gussied-up Golf for sales to really fly.

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe

Back in 2008, Cadillac threw down the gauntlet against its German competitors in an attempt to show that it could build the best high performance mid-sized luxury sedan. The result was the CTS-V. Even if the recent CTS-V Challenge proved to be somewhat less than authoritative in establishing the current car's dominance, it did show off its capabilities. Now Cadillac is expanding its CTS-V range by adding all of the V goodness to the coupe bodystyle that was revealed last month at the LA Auto Show.

The CTS-V coupe will debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week with everything that makes the CTS-V one our favorite super-sedans, albeit in a sexy new two-door shell. Aside from the sleek yet thick-of-beltline new suit, the only other real difference from the existing V is the one-inch wider track at the rear axle, which may or may not be noticeable when driving, and a marginally lower mass. The 556-horsepower supercharged LSA V8 engine and the choice of a manual or automatic six-speed gearbox carries over. We highly recommend that anyone considering a V regardless of bodystyle check the option box for the Recaro seats, they are worth every penny.

Carryover or not, we can't wait for a crack at the V coupe this summer. Now if only Cadillac would hurry up and build a V-wagon
